Compost: Reducing Our Waste

December 5, 2018 By Deidra

If you remember, back in August when we first got our tractor, we also were gifted a compost bin. It was exciting because it was one more step we could use in reducing our waste. We eat a lot of veggies and make a lot of salad.  For the scraps that I did not use in my broths, I would throw them away and I hated that because all I could think of was, “man, this would make great soil.”

So far what we’ve been tossing in there are:

  • Veggie scraps
  • Fruit scraps
  • Egg shells
  • Paper bags
  • Cardboard
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves

*In the warmer months – my water kefir grains which will help break things down faster.

There are many more things you can compost. We haven’t gotten that advanced at reducing our waste yet, even still, everyone has been participating. We’ve been using it for a couple of months now and today I want to show you how far we’ve come.

Fresh compost!

We are well on our way! Surprisingly, the compost smells good! Maybe that’s just the country girl in me. It smells fresh, like good earth. I can’t wait for Antoine to use it. Our patio and planters are pretty barren right now. But come spring, we’ll be planting and if we need to change out soil, we won’t have to run out and buy much. That’s the beauty of homesteading and self-sufficiency. You work with what you have at your disposal, create what you need, and spend less money! That’s a win!

Anyway, look for our first use of it in a blog coming up.

Stay tuned!
