Starting Seedlings Indoors And My Rookie Mistake

April 12, 2018 By Antoine

It’s spring.  The birds are chirping outside.  The pollen is flying everywhere making EVERYTHING yellow!  The grass is growing back. When you go to some stores, they have brand new plants out there ready for you to take home to toss into your garden.  Yep, it’s that time of the year to start planting if you are starting from seed.  For me, I felt like everything was passing me by as I had not started anything (even though you can start plants throughout the growing season). I had to do something and I needed to do something now! [Read more…] about Starting Seedlings Indoors And My Rookie Mistake

Introduction to Hydroponics

Introduction To My Hydroponic System
My Hydroponic System, Version 3.0

Hello, hello, hello! Today is a fun one for me as I get to dive into the gardening section of blogging, specifically with a focus on Hydroponics. If you are close to the gardening world, it may seem to be all the rage now-a-days. It is a really cool way to grow and is great because it uses a lot less water than a traditional soil garden. It is not a silver bullet or a replacement form of growing, but rather an alternative.  With that being said, if you have never heard of it before, I hope this introduction will give you a better understanding of hydroponics. Pressing the Pause Button

March 29, 2018 By Antoine

Pause ButtonYou may have noticed that we seemed to have gone dark as of lately.  Yep, yep, we have been ridiculously busy these past 2-2 1/2 weeks.  We’ve been traveling for kids’ sports as both of our children swim competitively. It is a pretty grueling sport as we (the parents) spend 5-6 days per week sitting next to a pool for swim practice smelling the awesomeness of chlorine.  Then you add in the swim meets, coupled with travel, it is a real doozy. For us, it is a year-round sport, except for the month of August. [Read more…] about Pressing the Pause Button

Can We Talk: Illness On The Homestead

March 12, 2018 By Deidra

Mug And SteamCan we talk? No really. Go grab some tea, coffee, water, wine or a cold one, get comfy and settle in. This is going to be long, but I think worth the read…Ready? Ok.

Sickness. It’s a part of life. There will be a percentage of us that won’t see more than a little cold. But there are others, like me, that will be diagnosed with a chronic illness that changes our lives one way or another. Maybe we have to change the way we eat, sleep, exercise, or just participate in life in general. Either way, chronic illness brings both change and sometimes uncertainty. Aloe: The Plant That Loves Neglect

March 6, 2018 By Deidra

My darling, Mr Green Thumb, can grow anything. He’s much like how his dad was – he can take something that was almost dead and spring it back to life. I, on the other hand, am Mrs. Brown Thumb. I kill stuff. Growing plants is just not my thing. I’ve tried before and failed miserably…except!

Aloe.

Aloe Vera Plant
Aloe “pup” happily being neglected.

I LOVE the Aloe Vera plant. Mainly because I can completely forget about it and it not only survives, but thrives. Seriously, it is the only thing in my house that I can completely ignore and it prefers it that way. Imagine that! The more I neglect it the more it loves me. We’re a match made in heaven. I started off with one plant and now I have four. I had five, but I gave one to my sister who is also a serial plant killer. I think the plant I gave her will be happy there LOL. My Sad Loaf of Bread

March 5, 2018 By Antoine

Sad Bread Loaf StandingThis past weekend, we found that the household had run out of bread.  With two growing kids at home consuming everything like human vacuum cleaners, it’s difficult to keep a little bit of anything around the house.  So, we are driving home from being out and about when Deidra mentions that we forgot to go pick up some bread.  Me being the baker that I am says, “I’ll just make a loaf of bread”, so the crisis was averted – temporarily. Why Appraisals Matter

February 28, 2018 By Antoine

Land AppraisalWhen you are going through the land/home purchasing process it can be quite a tall task.  There are many things to do and many items you need to keep on your mind.  One of these things is the Appraisal.  For those of you who have purchased a home or land before, you may be familiar with it and understand why you need one.  For those who are new to buying property, I want to share with you what we have learned while on our journey.

First and foremost, I am not a real estate agent or loan officer, so I speak only from personal experience.  We have purchased a home in the past, but we have never purchased raw land.  You would think that it would be the same as buying an existing home, [Read more…] about Why Appraisals Matter

Cheap, Easy, and Homemade Veggie Broth

February 27, 2018 By Deidra

tree bloom
This is minor. Some trees have gone full bloom!

It’s that time of year again, although it’s not suppose to be. Pollen is in the air and the house natives are feeling it. So, broth to the rescue! I usually make bone broth, but we have no bones I’d want to use. Instead, I have a bunch of vegetable scraps I’ve been saving. And this isn’t just for sickness. You can use this for any thing you need to cook involving a broth. So, here’s the recipe for my frugal and super easy veggie broth. [Read more…] about Cheap, Easy, and Homemade Veggie Broth
